FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What do those four Latin-sounding words on the homepage mean?
A: These are the four major areas of TotalTheater.com. Each name reflects the nature of information you'll find in the section:
CRITICOPIA: Theater reviews from across the U.S. and around the world. (Think of a cornucopia of theater criticism!)
PERIODICA: Articles, interviews and columns about the theater (Think of a reading room of magazines & other periodicals!)
REFERENCIA: A list of theater milestones (think of a reference shelf!)
PHOTORIUM: An archive of headshots and production stills. (Think of a photograph emporium!)

Q: I'm searching for something that I know is there, but now I can't find it. What's wrong?
A: Could be a couple of things. Sometimes our site is being updated or tinkered with. At those times, parts of our site may not be functional, or the whole site may be inaccessible. Please be patient, wait an hour or two, and try again.
Another answer might be that you've spelled your keyword incorrectly. Check again, or just use the letters you're sure of.
Another answer is that you may be in the wrong section. You might accidentally be looking in Referencia for a review, or in Criticopia for a feature. It never hurts to double-check.

Q: I tried to look up a review of a very famous show in Criticopia, but it wasn't listed.  What gives?
A: TotalTheater.com is run by a very small staff on a small budget. In the months and years to come, we hope to add thousands upon thousands more reviews, features and photographs. The material currently online, though considerable, is just a tiny fraction of the hundred years of theater history we have to catch up with! Please be patient as we slowly but surely add more and more content.
Please note, also, that our priority is to add information and reviews of new shows, which takes priority over historical material. Therefore, a show that just opened on Broadway goes on our site very quickly, whereas a Broadway hit from 1943 may take a long time to be categorized and added.

Q: Can I write for TotalTheater.com?
A: Possibly.  TotalTheater.com is always looking for skilled and insightful theater critics, journalists and essayists, especially from cities where we'd love to beef up our theater coverage.  The vast majority of our content is contributed by freelance writers.
That said, we ask that all our writers follow the same formatting regarding basic information about the shows they review (i.e., title, subtitle, author, etc.). If you're unsure, just look at any review in Criticopia and follow the headers.

Q: How do I submit a review or article for possible publication?
A: We prefer to get to know a writer's work first, so please send us a sample (or, better yet, two) of your critical/journalistic theater work.  You can send us a url of a published piece, or just the text of your piece, pasted into the body of your email (no attachments, please).  Email: paipress_at_aol.com, attention: Editorial. You can also snail-mail copies of your work to: Editorial, TotalTheater, P.O. Box 31, Greeley, CO 80632-0031. Whether by snail mail or email, a resume is helpful, as is a brief cover letter.

Q: If you decide to publish my work, what are my copyrights?
All TotalTheater writers maintain full ownership of their work.  TotalTheater merely purchases the right to publish the article on our website, in perpetuity. We also reserve the right to edit the article for spelling, grammar, length and other considerations for our readers.
The author has the right to submit the same article to any other publication, online or in print, at any time. We do not ask for exclusivity, just the right to print or reprint your article.

Q: May I submit work published elsewhere?
Absolutely, yes.  However, you must own the full legal right to submit and reprint your article, essay or review.  At the author's request, TotalTheater will print, alongside the review, a note that credits the original publication source.  (For example, the credit line might read, "This article first appeared in ArtScape, Dec. 2004.")

Q: What is the pay scale for publication at TotalTheater.com?
Alas, a very small stipend.  Most writers submit to TotalTheater for the prestige, the tearsheets, and the ability to expand their readership.  For more details, please contact us at paipress_at_aol.com.
