TV standout Kim Coles ("Living Single") opened the Crossroads season with a comedy she co-wrote with Charles Randolph-Wright about three childhood girlfriends (all played by Ms. Coles) from Brooklyn. There is the beautiful Jamaican immigrant Angela, the intelligent and sassy Shakronda, and the sweet and naive Kimme. Ms. Coles' play follows the young girls through grade school, high school, college and their respective careers. It is a heartwarming story in which one finds fame, another success and the third finds herself. Ms. Coles has a great sense of comedy timing, filling the theater with laughter throughout the evening. She is ably supported by Wolfgang Bodison, Scotch Ellis Loring, Gustavo Rex and Scott Whitehurst as the boys and men in the women's lives.
Homework has its distracting flaws. It takes a while for the audience to understand that three separate lives are being chronicled, and the evening is too long. Nonetheless, there is great talent on stage in an enjoyable play, aptly directed by Mr. Randolph-Wright. Homework is a work of promise with a superior production in its New Jersey premiere.
