Review:

Mr. Very Straight, Sammy (Duane Daniels) is talking with his long–time friend, Dean (John Garcia), who is not. They are having a serious conversation when the waiter (Jamie Effros) makes a couple of attempts to get an order. The two finally order some wine and continue their completely guy-type discussion. Challenges are tossed about, and finally the gauntlet is laid down and a bet is placed.

Sammy must pick up a guy, a male, a person of his gender, and develop a relationship of some significance. Dean must do the same with a female of the species. And thus the plot of Kevin Armento's Bets & Blue Notes is established.

The playwright's language is crisp and spare, the words tumble totally naturally from the actors. First in fast–paced delivery of the betting buddies to a charming tentativeness and shyness as the two pursue their goal of winning the bet.

Effros then plays some delightful gay guys that catch Sammy's eye. However, it is Peter (David Dartt) who is the prize.

Meanwhile, Dean, meets the lovely Frankie (Rachel Carey) at a book reading. Her ride -- Effros of course -- interrupts their short interlude. They do meet at a restaurant where there waiter is - well you know who plays that role by now.

Playwright Armento cuts between the two scenes at an ever-increasing rate, until there may be just one or two lines before lights out on one and up on the other. Director Loper made it all work excellently.

The progression of Sammy's relationship with Peter is totally camp. It is going much too fast for Sammy as Peter just gets so cuddly and cute. Peter places a wet one on Sammy, creating the comedic kiss of this theater season.

Meanwhile, Dean and Frankie are becoming very comfortable with each other. Their friendship is blossoming when Dean comes clean.

Bets & Blue Notes
is one of the best new plays I've seen in a couple of years. The dialogue is totally natural, whether it be cocky guy-talk, gay-straight play, or light romance. The pace is just about right.
The works of San Diego resident and playwright Kevin Armento are definitely headed for stages across the U. S.
